Canadians have been active members of the International Council for Exceptional Children since it was founded in 1922.

CCEC's achievements affect every child and every individual involved in the field of special education.

Since its founding, CCEC has advocated for exceptional students - those with disabilities and special challenges, and those with gifts and talents.

Belief has always been that students with special needs have the right to the highest quality education.

CCEC is committed to those who work with special students - educators, support personnel and parents - recognizing that these dedicated people need the resources, tools and professional opportunities to perform their jobs well.

To advance the education of and instructional quality provided for exceptional persons.
To improve conditions under which professionals work with exceptional persons.
To develop responsible legislation.
To establish and promote high standards of practice.
To encourage educators and parents to join CEC.
To encourage participation of Canadian professionals in all CEC activities, in Canada and around the world.

To accomplish these goals, CCEC stimulates and supports local and provincial initiatives to:
- Inform members of important developments and advances in our profession.
- Conduct research and publish results in CEC and other appropriate journals.
- Participate in the National Public Policy Committee.
- Develop provincial policy statements.
