BIOGRAPHY OF DR. SAM RABINOVITCH
Dr. Rabinovitch was born in Montreal in 1927. The son of a newspaper vendor in Montreal's poverty-ridden inner city, he always wanted to be a scientist. In 1944, he enrolled at McGill University as a physiology major, but in his third year he took a social psychology course that resulted in his switching to psychology. After post-graduate studies in Indiana in 1948, he worked with prisoners and retarded adults in British Columbia before joining the Montreal Children's Hospital in 1954 as Director of the Psychology Department.

A pioneer in the study of specific learning disabilities, Dr. Rabinovitch was regarded as one of the world's leading authorities. Known to countless children and teachers as "Dr. Sam," he played a critical role in the development of an awareness of the needs of children with learning disabilities. In 1959, he founded the McGill-Montreal Children's Hospital Learning Centre where teachers and psychologists had the opportunity to work with LD children under his direction.
Dr. Rabinovitch was an effective and popular speaker that resulted in his being in constant demand to lecture around the world. In 1971 the American Association for Children with Learning Disabilities awarded him a Certificate of Recognition for outstanding service.

One of Dr. Rabinovitch's most significant contributions was the role he played in making both parents and teachers more sensitive to the needs and feelings of children. He continually stressed that we could never be sure of the highest level of achievement of which any one child was capable. Assessments were truly used by him as tools of understanding and teaching, rather than as justification for failure.
Dr. Sam's teaching methods were firmly grounded in his overriding concern for the child, and for this, he will always be remembered.
