Within the Council for Exceptional Children and the Canadian Council for Exceptional Children, there is a category of membership specifically for students. There are approximately 8,000 student members worldwide, organized at the local, provincial, national, and international level.

Student CEC's primary purpose is to present students with opportunities to improve professional educational standards and increase awareness of exceptional children and youth.

Membership

Anyone interested in the education of exceptional children and youth is welcome to join CEC. The student membership category is made up of persons enrolled in a college or university.

For information on how to join as a student member, please see http://www.cec.sped.org/mb/typesofmembership.html

The student membership provides all of the benefits of professional membership at half the price.

To find out if your college or university has an active student chapter, or for information on how to start a chapter at your school, contact http://www.cec.sped.org

Leadership

The CEC Standing Committee on Students replaces the International Student CEC Executive Committee. Under the new structure, the Standing Committee consists of seven members: the two student representatives to the Representative Assembly (elected by the student CEC membership) and five other members. In addition, the student member of the Board of Directors will serve as an ex-officio member of the committee.

In What Types of Activities Will I be Involved?

As a member of the Standing Committee on Students, you will:

• Attend a summer planning meeting at CEC headquarters in Virginia

• Participate in the development of the CEC student action plan

• Write articles for CEC publications

• Implement the student scholarship and awards program

• Increase awareness of student issues

• Help to promote CEC

• Help to build the knowledge of student members in various areas of exceptionalities

• Help plan student activities for the annual CEC convention

• Participate in the Standing Committee on Students committee meeting at the annual CEC convention

• Plan and participate in the Student Forum meeting and other convention activities

CEC covers normal business expenses incurred in fulfilling the duties of office, including travel, hotels, registrations, and meals for pre-approved meetings and activities.

How about our subcommittee!
Subcommittees play a very important role in Student CEC. The work they do helps Student CEC accomplish its goals. There is currently one active subcommittee. Please contact Amanda Green at nicedaisy3@yahoo.com if you are interested in serving on the subcommittee.

Awards and Scholarships Subcommittee
The main goal of this committee is to solicit nominations from the field for Student CEC awards and scholarships, including graduation and outstanding student of the year awards and the black caucus and ethnic diversity scholarships. This committee then selects the award and scholarship recipients.
